ALICIA MARTIN ( Madrid 1964) is showing her work for the first time in Valencia with an exhibition titled Biographies. It includes three series of her recent work: two series of photographs and a series of 3 large sculptures.
Bio-graphy as a reference to a fusion between the organic and its graphic
record on paper. From the organic being to the printed book; it also relates to the images of a little girl’s body (her own daughter) : fragments of that child’s body appear muddled up with a heap of books and almost blended within a kind of motion into the fragmented books. Movement is the link between the series shown: three large pieces of springing books flowing from the top of the wall , and that same motion treated individually and frozen in her last series of photographs.
Alicia Martín has used the book object as a theme almost since the beginning of her artistic carreer; not trying to draw their content towards the resulting work , but using books as an aseptic matter, withdrawing power from the superabundance of information in order to create suspension and empty space; books are given a new condition, still , we cannot prevent their operating as keepers of memories. A work full of references and irreverent winks to the relation between contemporary art and the culture world.
