The GalerÌa Tom·s March is showing from the 24th of January 2003 the recent work of painter XISCO MENSUA (Barcelona, 1960).

The strange title of ìlamortî - playing with the graph of the catalan words for love and death - gathers his latest work (oil and watercolour on canvas and cardboard) where the artist approaches the dialogue between Eros and Tanatos that flows along with all human existence.

XISCO MENSUAís painting -though using oil, watercolour etc, - is fundamentally based on drawing. It tends to the synthesis of elements in order to obtain the greatest expressivity out of the minimum means. His works are colour planes on which the brush roams soberly, drawing the lines that build the figures of the children, the lovers, or the sleepers. Rough themes -as birth, sex, illness and death- constantly gravitate in his work; but in all cases, inspiring us as a result with a tender feeling.
In many of these works, the artist introduces figures taken out of the History of Art or out of the medias and gives them a new interpretation as models that he sometimes repeats in diferent pieces obtaining a double orientation of reading: the theme itself, and the allusion to the medias or the new reading of historical pieces.

XISCO MENSUA had his first gallery solo exhibition in 1990 (GalerÌa Temple, Valencia). Since then he has had many solo and group shows in the main spanish galleries in Madrid, Santander, Sevilla, Barcelona, Jerez, Palma de Mallorca. In 1996, he had his first exhibition in Copenhagen. His work can be found in the most important museums and collections as: FundaciÛn la Caixa of Barcelona, Artium of ¡lava, MNCARS of Madrid, IVAM of Valencia, FundaciÛn Coca Cola of Madrid, Museo de BBAA of Oviedo, etc.
